OSPREYS ONLINE
Bird’s nest, that can be observed by the internet users, is located within the area of the Lipka Forest District in north-west Poland. The transmission is an effect of the cooperation between the State Forests and PSE-Operator.
Lipka Forest District takes care of one of the few Ospreys’ nests in Poland. A pair of those extremely rare species (about 30 pairs nesting in Poland) has been nesting for many years on one of the artificial platforms placed on the tree. Few years ago ospreys relocated to the electricity pylon. Unfortunately during winter the nest was destroyed. The moment of its rebuilding was a great opportunity to install a camera near the birds’ nest. At night the nest is illuminated by very weak infrared light (that’s why the image is black and white), which enables you to observe birds, however the light is invisible to animals.
This is the first in Poland transmission from the osprey nest. Earlier there were transmissions showing the life of white-tailed eagle in the Kutno Forest District and Dobrocin Forest District. Initiators of the transmission want not only to enable people to observe one of the rarest Accipitriformes, but also to explain their role in the environment and at the same time to extend protective activities of these predators.
According to Komitet Ochrony Orłów, organization that monitors the population of predator species for many years, within last few years the number of nests that are built on the electricity pylons has increased. In 2013 out of 27 nests, controlled by the KOO, 4 were built on the electricity pylons. Unfortunately the steel construction of pylon is not a stable foundation for nests, which degrade quickly and falling branches lead to transmission line failures. Installing special platforms (such as those under the nest we observe), in places picked up by Ospreys, could increase the population of those beautiful predators.
Transmission is possible thanks to the cooperation between the State Forests and PSE-Operator.
